KASHAN

Kashan carpets are normally composed of wool pile on a cotton warp and weft base. The colours used are predominantly red, blue and beige. Sometimes there is a central medallion.  Some Kashan carpets have an all over design.  The Kashan rug on the right is typical of this style of rugs. 

These carpets are made in Kashan in Iran.  The wool used is of very fine quality. The warp and weft  of some of the finer rugs are composed of silk on a silk base.  Patterns include niches, floral motifs and trees.  The dense knotting using the Persian knot mean that these carpets last a very long time. One of the most famous carpets of all time the Ardebil rug at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is believed to have been hand knotted in the city of Kashan. Kashan city was supposed to be one of the significant trading places on the silk road.
