Kilims are flatweaves. In contrast to handmade carpets, kilims have no pile. Some of the most beautiful hand crafted floor adornments are flatweaves or kilims. The wonderful art of weaving a kilim is an art that takes place in many countries. Traditionally Kilims are produced in the former Persian Empire, including Iran, the Balkans and Turkey.
Examples of kilims are Suzani and Serjan. Apart from Iranian kilims, there are Turkish, Chinese, Asian, Caucasian, and Afghan kilims to name but a few.
As well as being used on the floor, Kilims are used as decorative wall hangings and on sofas and chairs. Many kilims have beautiful geometric patterns.
